Meshes of the Afternoon (Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid - 1943)

I just watched this and it was beautiful. I’d been told for a while to see it as people thought it might be my sort of film, and yes it was. I found it quite stirring and the images bewitching. It has many elements that I love: paranoia, illusions,  doppelgängers, mirrors, fantasy, and let’s not forget that the director herself is the actress in the film (as a self-portraiture artist myself this appeals to me greatly). the film reminds me of a mixture between Un Chien Andalou, Cocteau’s work, and Repulsion. I have a rampant desire to see her other films. it’s pretty incredible being an independent, experimental female filmmaker in the 1940’s!
